A parent in our constituency suffered a serious head injury after a large piece of cladding flew off the school building, striking her on the head.
Thirteen years of reckless Tory cuts to school’s capital spend budgets have left school buildings in dangerous disrepair – and my constituent is now paying the price. Ministers need to take urgent action to address this crisis before anyone else is harmed.
In February I asked the Minister if he will meet with me to discuss what urgent support can be given to my constituent and the school.
I also wrote to Gillian Keegan to demand urgent action to reverse cuts and ensure schools are safe, before anyone else is harmed.
I have since met with my constituent, the school and the Minister to discuss what support can be provided to the school and I am continuing to work with the Department of Education to try and secure this support.
I have also been working with cross-party colleagues on the Public Accounts Committee to assess more broadly how the Department of Education are responding to this scandal.
Not only must the government address the school building safety scandal, but this must be part of a fully funded, teacher-led plan to finally end austerity in our schools.
