Last week I joined colleagues, campaigners, Labour Party members and NGOs at Labour Party Conference in Liverpool. Thank you to everyone who emailed me and asked me to attend an event or stall. Below is a summary of what I got up to.

I was pleased to see a number of important motions passed during the conference, including proportional representation (which I know many in our constituency have been campaigning for), a £15 minimum wage and public ownership. You can read about all of the policy motions passed on the conference floor here.

From delivering a zero-carbon energy system by 2030 and the creation of a publicly-owned energy company, to nationalising the UK’s railways and a new Hillsborough Law, there were also alot of good policies announced over the week. You can read about them here.

  • Throughout the week I attended a number of stalls in the conference centre to meet with representatives from charities and NGOs and hear about the campaigns they are running. I met with Sense, British Heart Foundation, Alzheimers society, Cancer Research, Dogs Trust, Best for Britain and LGBT+ Labour. I also met with CWU, Unite, UCU, FBU and the National Farmers Union.
  • On the first day of the conference I joined a rally outside the exhibition centre with Labour for Trans Rights. Our Labour movement is lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and straight. The fate of any one part of our coalition is tied to the fate of all our coalition. It was great to meet with LGBTQ+ campaigners from across our movement.
  • I then met with representatives from the Campaign to Protect Rural England to discuss the latest round of Government attacks on nature and what we can do to fight them.
  • I spoke about the drivers of the cost of living crisis and how we can address them at a panel event with RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch, my colleague Andy McDonald, Progressive Economy Forum’s Director James Meadway and the Centre for Local Economic Strategies Director Antonia Jennings.
  • On Sunday evening I DJed at Labour for a Green New Deal and Young Labour’s disco, helping raise funds for their campaigns! You can find out more about LGND here and Young Labour here.
  • On Monday morning I joined colleagues from the Socialist Campaign Group to show our solidarity to Liverpool dock workers striking for fair pay and conditions.
  • As Chair of the APPG on SEND, I met with the National Deaf Children’s Society to discuss the SEND review, clear face masks and the situation in schools for deaf children at the moment.
  • I then spoke at a Smith Institute event about how we can invest in a fair and just transition.
  • I joined campaigners for a panel event on delivering real democracy hosted by Makes Votes Matter. From scrapping voter ID and defending our right to protest, to supporting the growth of cooperatives and enabling the work of unions in strengthening community and work-place democracy, proportional representation must be part of a package of steps a Labour Government takes to undo the harm of 10 years of Tory rule, and rebuild our democratic system.
  • I met with campaigners from Hacked Off and heard about their latest campaigners for a free and accountable press.
  • On Tuesday morning I met with the Royal College of Nursing to hear about the situation for nurses across the country at the moment and learn more about their first ever strike ballot, happening this week. I will be working with the RCN locally to fight for better pay and conditions for all nurses.
  • I joined Another Europe is Possible to discuss Brexit Britain and the environmental emergency. Only by building solidarity across borders will we be able to tackle the greatest crisis of our time.
  • In the context of increasingly draconian crackdowns on protesters and striking workers, I spoke at an event hosted by Labour Assembly Against Austerity on defending our right to strike and resist. I was joined by campaigners and union representatives from across the country.
  • I spoke at the New Economy Foundation’s event on how we win a Great Homes Upgrade. Retrofitting our homes should be a policy priority of this Government, helping address both the cost of living and climate emergency. Instead the Government is focusing on expanding our reliance on fossil fuels, which will do nothing to address the crises we are facing.
  • On Tuesday night I joined colleagues from the Socialist Campaign Group to speak at a rally at the World Transformed. It was amazing to see so many people from across our movement there. I spoke about the growing alliance between climate activists and striking workers, and the need for a socialist green new deal that redistributes wealth and power back to people.
  • Before taking the train home on Wednesday, I met with representatives from Women in Transport to discuss their campaigns to improve equality for women working in the industry, and what I can do to support their work.
