Yesterday the government announced its roadmap out of lockdown. We now know that lockdown restrictions will be rolled back in four stages. The below table outlines what restrictions will be rolled back in each stage, and the earliest date each stage will happen:

When each new stage is reached will depend on the following:

  • The continuation of a successful vaccine programme.
  • Evidence showing vaccines are sufficiently effective in reducing hospitalisations and deaths in those vaccinated.
  • Infection rates not risking a surge in hospitalisations which would put unsustainable pressure on the NHS.
  • The assessment of the risks not fundamentally changing due to new Variants of Concern.

The government have promised that further details about support for jobs and businesses will come in the budget next Wednesday. I will await this announcement, and be ready to hold the Chancellor to account over any gaps in the support package.
