🏠 A few weeks ago, I questioned the government over their failed Starter Homes programme – which saw none of the 200,000 promised homes delivered. This week our Public Accounts Committee report was published, calling on the government to ditch the false promises and set out clear, staged, funded plans to deliver these much needed homes.
🍽️ This week I sponsored Labour MP Ian Byrne’s Early Day Motion calling for the Right To Food to be included in the National Food Strategy, to make it a clear obligation on governments now and in the future. With 10 mill people in the UK suffering from food insecurity urgent action is needed. I will keep campaigning over the coming months to hold the government to account over this.
🌎 I spoke at Labour for a Green New Deal’s event on Thursday night, speaking about the need for a radical Green Economic Recovery plan to address the dual nature and climate crises, including my proposal for a National Nature Service.
🔥 Following my debate on moorland burning lots of you got in touch to ask questions about this practice and its effect on the climate and ecological emergency. I put these questions to peatland expert Richard Lindsay. You can watch his answers here – I hope you find them as interesting as I did!
🍺 Lots of local pubs and restaurant owners in my constituency are worried about what the next few months will mean for their businesses. On Monday I shared their concerns with Treasury officials and asked whether the department would provide more support for hospitality businesses if they are slower to reopen.
💻 Thank you to Sheffield residents who have taken part in the Star’s laptops for kids campaign. I will continue to press the Government on this, so that campaigns like this aren’t necessary in the future. When national policies are failing us, it is great to see the people of Sheffield step in to fill the gap, and make sure no young person is denied access to education because they don’t have a laptop at home.
