We have all looked on in horror at the murder of George Floyd and the epidemic of police brutality and racist violence our siblings of colour have and continue to face.

I’ve written to Boris Johnson, calling on him to condemn Trump’s use of force against his own citizens, and suspend UK sales of teargas, riot shields & rubber bullets to the US.

It is not enough, however, to speak out against racism abroad without taking steps to end structural racism in the UK. As yesterday’s Public Health England report showed, COVID-19 has further exposed the health inequities produced by the society we live in.

I have urged the Prime Minister publish a serious action plan for tackling the inequalities the PHE report highlights, addressing not only the immediate problems of COVID-19, but the root causes of the disparities it contains.

I stand in solidarity with the family of George Floyd, and all victims of racist violence and institutional racism.

Black Lives Matter.
