Our country is heading into a crisis this autumn, with Boris Johnson’s Tories driving us towards a no-deal cliff edge. No-deal would destroy people’s jobs, push up food prices in the shops and open our NHS to takeover by US private corporations.

Labour will do everything necessary to stop a disastrous no-deal for which this government has no mandate.

“Only Labour can stop Johnson’s no-deal Brexit. We want a public vote on any deal and I will campaign to remain.

“The Lib Dems refused to work with Jeremy Corbyn to stop a disastrous no-deal. But they were willing to join a Conservative government and open the door to austerity. They savagely cut funding for hospitals, schools and social care. They stood by as rough sleeping increased massively, violent crime rocketed and police numbers were slashed.

“You can’t trust the Lib Dems to stand up to the Tories. I will do that. And now at this most critical juncture Boris Johnson has decided to suspend Parliament and run away from scrutiny.

“Whichever way people voted, to Leave or Remain, no-one voted for Boris Johnson’s shutdown of democracy. I am appalled at his recklessness.

“That’s why I joined with Labour MPs and thousands of concerned Sheffield residents to protest against Boris Johnson’s plot to shut down Parliament, subvert democracy and force no-deal.”
